Simms History

In 1886, Thomas Stockwell Simms commenced the Simms Company. Mr. Simms purchased a small broom and brush enterprise with funds as a Veteran from the American Civil War with his bonus and soldiers’ back pay. This company relocated in 1872 to Saint John, New Brunswick. This port city became well regarded for its shipbuilding contributions and famous all over the world.

Thomas Simms underwent many difficulties but persisted with a variety of talents. He lost two wives and suffered a terribly catastrophic factory fire. Nonetheless, he did not give up and was fortunate to forge ahead despite these tragedies.



Simms was a keen traveller. During the 1900s, he was one of the initial brush manufacturers to travel to China to directly purchase bristles. He was involved in the lay missionary movement. As a testament to his determination and generous efforts, the Simms Memorial Baptist Church is found in India with a solid congregation.

Lewis Wesley Simms

In 1908, Lewis Wesley Simms was crowned the company leader after his father passed away. He was the business President for the next 50 years. LW had a commanding presence and a vibrant personality. He expanded the business his father began from local to countrywide. Lewis designed automated brush-making equipment and promoted it, changing the market forever. Inside the Canadian business community, he obtained national prominence. He had become the President of the Canadian Manufacturing Association along with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

He was posthumously inducted into the Industry Hall of Fame of the Canadian Hardware Houseware Manufacturing Association and the New Brunswick Hall of Fame. Described as a visionary business leader and master of individual relations, the evidence of the successful business speaks for itself.
